3d chess set feedback

Gave this a try for a game. Works pretty well - 3d is hard to pull off and this is a good start.
Main issue: pieces are too big/fat for their squares - makes everything look crowded. There are actual suggestions from FIDE about size etc... if you need some ideas. But googling for chess sets, most pieces don't take up so much square space. Just does not feel "right" as a tournament player. www.google.com/search?q=tournament+chess+set&source=lnms&tbm=isch

Thanks lichess team!
Hmmm... It's a bit of a toss up.

On the one hand, yes, smaller pieces are more 'realistic' but on the other hand, smaller pieces will be less detailed and harder to discern.

I kind've agree with you that smaller pieces might be better. What do you say to there being a set or two being smaller in size for this reason? That can be done with little hassle.
Okay, I've designed a set of pieces that are smaller, based off the first piece style from the 3D options. It should be out later today (hopefully).
Cool, size options would be nice.

Couple other (minor) things:
Depth perception: likely too much effort to pull off, but 3d needs size differences to match perspective expectations. Not sure how you pull this off code-wise (e.g. king on 8th rank is 7/10ths size of king on 1st - and kings in between scale accordingly).

Option to play vs. watch: I find watching 3d quite nice vs. playing with it (currently). If an option, I might choose to leave 3d on for viewing and 2d for playing.
Yes, depth perception would be nice, but sadly it is well beyond the scope of chessground. To get depth perception done correctly we'd need to run WebGL or something, which also has the complication of: you'd lose a significant amount of detail.

You may have figured out that everything has been pre-rendered with HQ ray trace imaging, which is why things look so nice. This is opposed to real-time rendering which will be very basic, but necessary for depth.

On the other hand, I personally think that this projection type is quite nice. Having all the pieces the same size and projected at the same angle helps with user interaction.
Yup, agree - it is nice - I am getting used to it. One of the best 3d boards I have played on.
BTW - maybe by design - but the 1st rank squares are bigger than others - most noticeable when clicking on pieces (the highlight fill does not take up the whole square http://i.imgur.com/L4jEbsh.png )
Very nice new boards,Animation works so much better on mobile,
good job,
Thanks
The 1st rank of squares is longer because that's the front edge of the board. It's more pronounced on other boards.

Thanks, goldilocks, I appreciate it. :)
I now only play with the 3D - it really is the only 3D set I have ever found to be able to play bullet with. Not sure if it is good for my online chess, but it feels more like a real chess set. Congrats on that! Look forward to any future options (size etc.)
